According to sources, Baron Davis will be signing with the New York Knicks later today. Davis was released under the amnesty clause in the new NBA labor agreement by the Cleveland Cavaliers and cleared waivers Friday allowing him to sign with any team. He had two years and $28 million remaining on his contract. Although Davis is not able to play immediately due to a back injury, the signing will help the Knicks in the guard department after releasing Chauncey Billups, who ended up being claimed by the Los Angeles Clippers. There are also rumors floating around that Gilbert Arenas could wind up with the New York Knicks after being released by the Orlando Magic. The Knicks starting lineup in their first preseason game on December 17th consisted of Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, Landry Fields and Toney Douglas. This should change dramatically if they do add Davis and/or Arenas to the mix.
The Los Angeles native has played with the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers over his 12-year career. He has averaged 16.5 points, 7.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 3.9 rebounds per game.
