Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is reporting that even though the Rangers seem to have plenty of pitching coming in for the 2012 season, they are still interested in Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey. After winning the bidding for potential starter Yu Darvish and signing free-agent Joe Nathan, the Rangers are still pursuing pitching. They know this is a very important part of winning and don’t seem shy about what they are trying to do.
Bailey is also being pursued by the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, according to Rosenthal, but the Rangers are still right in the mix. Since they did not go through on a trade for Gio Gonzalez, they still have plenty of prospects to use as trade bait in another deal. And if they do end up signing Darvish to a deal, they will not lose any prospects or draft picks like they would be trading for someone or signing a free-agent within Major League Baseball.
Andrew Bailey is a closer from New Jersey who was drafted in the 6th round of the 2006 draft by the Oakland Athletics. He won Rookie of the Year honors in 2009 and has spent the last three years dominating for the Athletics bullpen with a 2.07 ERA, 75 saves, .954 WHIP and a 9.0 SO/9. Last year was his worst year since coming up to the majors with a 3.24 ERA, 24 saves and a 1.104 WHIP.
