There are a lot of questions swirling around the situation that has now ended for the 2011 season regarding the New York Jets. Their offense sputtered the last few games of the season with them not even reaching the 20-point mark in any of their last three games. Their average was 23.6 points per game for the 2011 season, ranking 13th in the league. Those games also happened to be losses to the Eagles, Giants and Dolphins in a run that could have put them in the playoffs if they would have come out on the other side of those games.
But there seems to be bigger problems with the Jets. Santonio Holmes reportedly got into it with Mark Sanchez and other players according to reports coming from NFL.com, ESPN and NYDailyNews.com. The Daily News is reporting that some sources say Holmes has to go because of his antics on and off the field. One of the many problems came in the last game of the regular season against the Miami Dolphins.
“Holmes’ antics have been going on all year but exploded in Miami when he pouted during the game, ignored Sanchez in the huddle and infuriated his teammates.”
“He’s a cancer. It’s like dealing with a 10-year-old.”
Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter of the Miami game. It seems that he also blew off Mark Sanchez and his meetings with wide receivers and showed no respect for his quarterback. ESPN.com said it best.
“Now it’s clear why New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and top receiver Santonio Holmes weren’t on the same page on the field. It turns out the pair couldn’t on the same page off the field, either.”
Now comes the decision the Jets have to make in the coming offseason. Do they keep Holmes and try to work things out so they can get the offense going? Or do they cut him and pay him. That’s right. NFL.com’s Michael Lombardi reports Holmes will make $7.5 million guaranteed in 2012. Not good news if you are a Jets fan and thought you could just get rid of him easily.
That’s not the only problem the Jets may be dealing with this offseason. The NY Daily News is also reporting that Rex Ryan had a disconnect with the offensive side of his coaching staff. In other words, he gave them free reign to do what they wanted. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will most likely be returning in 2012, but is interviewing for the Jaguars head coaching position. This is a problem they will have to deal with soon due to the results of this season for the Jets. The stories and problems of a team are like an iceberg, you can only see the tip of it and everyone knows there are problems that are not seen. For Jets fans, they are hoping it’s a small iceberg.
