The Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs have agreed to a deal sending Carlos Zambrano to Miami in exchange for Chris Volstad, reports Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com. Levine has been tweeting about the deal and also mentions that the Cubs will cover $15 million of the $18 million Zambrano is owed for the 2o12 season. The deal is pending a physical. Mike Axisa of MLBTraderumors.com has a great article here covering the trade and the possible rotation of the Marlins for the upcoming season.
Carlos Zambrano is a 30-year old pitcher from Venezuela who was signed as a free agent in 1997 by the Chicago Cubs. Zambrano has had many problems getting along with teammates and front office personnel throughout his career and is probably the biggest reason for the move. He has posted a 3.60 ERA over 11 seasons with a record of 125-81 and a WHIP of 1.319. He also has a 7.6 SO/9 and 4.1 BB/9 and has finished in the top 5 of the Cy Young Award voting three times.
Chris Volstad is a 6’8″ 320 lb. pitcher from Florida and was drafted in the 1st round, 16th overall of the 2005 MLB Draft. He has posted a 4.59 ERA over four major league seasons with a record of 32-39 and a 1.409 WHIP. He has also posted a 5.8 SO/9 and 3.1 BB/9 and posted 1.64 HR/9 which ranked 6th overall in 2009 and 1.25 HR/9 which ranked 21st for 2011 out of pitchers who have at least 100 innings thrown in that year, which could cause problems in the future for the big righty.
