Who is King? Top dynasties in professional sports

Which team has the greatest dynasty in professional sports? This selection of the top franchise in the four major professional sports: Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League and the National Hockey League, is calculated by the number of championships won by each team. The team with the most championships is selected as the one with the greatest dynasty.

National Football League – NFL

In the National Football League, the Green Bay Packers have the most championships, with 13, according to “Championship History.” Although the Packers’ Super Bowl Championships totals three, they won ten other championships before the Super Bowl was first played in 1967. They won eleven NFL championships before the NFL merged with the AFL (American Football League) in 1970. This included the first two Super Bowls.

The Packers twice won NFL titles in three- straight years. They did it under the guidance of Curly Lambeau from 1929 through 1937. They did it again under Vince Lombardi from 1965 through 1967. On the field, Forrest Gregg and Herb Adderley have won the most championships for the Packers with six each.

National Basketball Association – NBA

Equally as impressive, is the Boston Celtics dynasty in the National Basketball Association. The Celtics have won 17 championships. In 1956 coach Red Auerbach traded for the second over-all pick in the NBA Draft. He selected Bill Russell, a standout Center from The University of San Francisco.

Russell went on to establish himself as the most successful Celtic in the franchise history by wining 11 NBA championships. He dominated the NBA with defensive skill. Although he never led the league in scoring, Russell nevertheless won the Most Valuable Player award five times. He also averaged 22.5 rebounds per game during his career, which further illustrates his value to the Celtics.

National Hockey League – NHL

Moving to the National Hockey League, the dominant team is the Montreal Canadians. The Canadians have risen the Stanley Cup 24 times. As of 2010, they earned 25 percent of all Stanley Cups championships. They won five straight from 1955 through 1959.

The most successful Canadian was Henri Richard, who skated for the Canadians in 11 of those championships. Richard skated fluidly and quickly, which earned him the nickname “Pocket Rocket.” He played in 1256 regular season games for the Canadians, the most of any player.

Major League Baseball – MLB

Turning to Major League Baseball, the leader is the New York Yankees. The Yankees have captured the most baseball championships with 27. Known as “The Bronx Bombers,” they have also claimed 40 American League Pennants. Since the 1920’s, the Yankees have appeared in at least one World Series in every decade.

Catcher Yogi Berra played in the most with 10. Berra was a popular player who is remembered for his quotations. Berra said, “It ain’t over until it’s over.” He also said, “So what if I’m ugly. I never saw anybody hit with his face.”
